Social anxiety is not caused by a lack of social skills — most people with social anxiety are perfectly capable conversationalists when the alarm is quiet. Teaching skills doesn't address why the alarm fires in social situations.
Being forced into feared social situations before the biological alarm has settled creates more distressing social memories — strengthening the association between social situations and fear, not weakening it.
Beta-blockers and SSRIs can reduce the physical symptoms of social anxiety — but the biological alarm mechanism remains active. Social confidence doesn't develop while the alarm is merely being suppressed.
CBT works with the beliefs and predictions social anxiety generates — 'they will judge me,' 'I will seem foolish.' But social anxiety is not generated by a belief; it is generated by the biological alarm firing in social situations. Rational challenge does not recalibrate a neurological alarm.

EMDR processes the emotional distress attached to specific painful social memories — it is not designed to recalibrate the biological alarm that generates anxiety across all social situations. Social anxiety is maintained by an alarm threshold, not by attachment to individual memories.
Hypnotherapy builds conscious confidence and positive associations around social situations — it does not recalibrate the biological alarm that fires in those situations. The alarm mechanism operates at a neurological level that conscious suggestion does not reach.
